Dermal Fillers 101

With all of the products offered on the market, it’s hard to keep track of what’s what. We’ve compiled a simple list that explains the difference between different kinds of Dermal Fillers. What works for one person, may not be ideal for another.

There are many other types of filler rejuvenation available. Below is a list of common filler options:

Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA):

PMMA has a long history of safe use in many other medical applications, including hip replacement implants and skull plates. It functions as a support matrix for natural collagen production, typically resulting in natural, enduring regeneration as wrinkles are filled and facial contours are restored. In Canada, Bellafill is the only recognized PMMA Dermal Filler. Results last 5+ years.

Collagen:

Solely Collagen injections have lost their place in the market. Current products seek to increase your own collagen production, rather than simply injecting it. Collagen is a natural protein found in your cartilage, bones and teeth. Fillers made with collagen are sourced from human, bovine, or porcine tissue. They can be used to fill facial contours with results typically lasting about 3 months. There are no commercial purely collagen fillers currently available in the United States or Canada.

Hyaluronic Acid:

Hyaluronic acid is a natural component of your skin and joints. It has been used for years as a treatment for arthritis. In addition, it has become one of the most popular wrinkle fillers. When used to correct facial wrinkles and folds, an HA filler typically lasts 6 months to 1 year. Most common products: Restylane, Juvederm, Perlane.

Calcium Hydroxylapatite:

Calcium hydroxylapatite is a mineral compound found in human bones and teeth. Fillers made with this compound consist of calcium-based microspheres, which stimulate collagen, in a water-based gel. As one of the heaviest facial fillers, calcium hydroxylapatite is typically used to fill the deep creases and folds. Most common product: Radiesse

Poly-l-lactic Acid:

Polymer fillers are made with synthetic material. When injected, this substance stimulates a gradual process of collagen production. Unlike other dermal fillers, polymers don’t provide immediate results. Rather, they require a series of treatments that gradually stimulate collagen production. Most common product: Sculptra

Autologous fat grafting: Fat taken from the one place of the body and used to treat wrinkles or augment specific other areas of body. The procedure, known as fat grafting, involves a more extensive treatment than other fillers because the fat must be extracted first.
